He preached the Word

Scripture: Mark 2:2    …and he preached the Word to them.

Observe   What did he preach?  The New Testament preached Christ and his work, but that hasn’t happened in Jesus’ timeline yet. He probably preached the law but with authority people hadn’t seen before. He probably preached what he shared with his disciples in Luke 24: All that was said in Moses, the Psalms and the prophets concerning himself. He must have preached the Scripture about the Messiah (wouldn’t he?) He ‘preached’ to the disciples on the road to Emmaus and his own eleven how the Old Testament revealed about himself.

Applications     In our current days, do we hear the good news of Jesus in this context (ie. Jesus as the focus of the Old Testament)? Indeed, how much of the ‘preaching’ is centered on Jesus at all? Or do we hear ‘sermons’ about how to practice the fruit of the Spirit, or to make sure our faith is fervent, or whatever. Is our – is my! – preaching centered on Jesus, not as an example but as substitute and Saviour? If you continue to hear preaching that presents Jesus as example, then at least read the Old Testament about Jesus as a substitute and Saviour

Application   When I read the Old Testament, do it with Jesus in view.
Prayer   Holy Spirit, let the Bible (and perhaps especially the Old Testament) as I read, lead me to read ‘looking’ for Jesus. After all, you inspired it to do just that.
